OPTIONED! A tent on jupiter
Caged Film Ltd in association with Templeheart Films and KenMor Films have just optioned Derek Nicoletto’s drama ‘A Tent on Jupiter.’
A note about my new feature biography Ralph - the movie. I met Ralph personally at a lunch spot before I ever knew his incredible story, only part of which is chronicled here in this NY Times article. (what it doesn't say is that Ralph bribed and begged the clerk to open the doors early on the first day same sex marriage was legal so he and Dick could be the first). We spent two years together interviewing and I spent another one writing and shaping the story, picking only a portion to explore. I was lucky enough to gain his and Dick's life rights. If anyone would like to read the script it is a harrowing tale of one man's fight from being a survivor to being of service, please reach out.
Derek Nicoletto was named as a FINALIST in the Inroads Fellowship 2020.
TOP LIST TRENDING - The Homestudy is trending at the top of the Blacklist. 1/29/2020
THE BLACKLIST gives THE HOMESTUDY an 8/10 review: My new, 2020 rewrite of The Homestudy just received an 8/10 rating on The Blacklist - a rating given to less than 5% of all scripts in the database.
"Rarely is a script able to do all of the things that this script does. Funny, honest, and immensely powerful, it tells a uniquely compelling story about one man's heart-wrenching fight for legitimacy as a father to his son, and in the process strikes at the heart of the universal human themes of love, acceptance, grace, and strength. It also manages to have an honest discussion about the injustices that still exist in our society. The story doesn't just highlight what it means to be a good father or parent; it reminds us what it means to be a good person. And in a sea of cynicism and pessimism at the box office, that is so refreshing. The plot is clear, well-paced, and absolutely gut-wrenching at times, all in the service of a powerful resolution that's so satisfying it will jerk tears from the most stoic of audiences. The characters are exceptional, especially our protagonist, Eric, a man so quietly heroic, but still complex and flawed enough to have room to grow and arc. The dialogue is pitch-perfect, knowing when to be nuanced, subtle, and subtextual, and when to deliver its powerfully earnest and heartfelt monologues. There really aren't enough good things to say about this script. It's a wonderful story, and an exceptional piece of writing.
With the introduction of streaming platforms and other new buyers into the feature market, the demand for character-driven dramedies like this one has seen an uptick, which positions this project well. Of course, this script's best asset really is its quality. It's exceptional and will stand out in any executive's weekend read pile. It's original, with characters we haven't seen before, and the thematic and social conversations it has elevate it compared to the more derivative scripts it's competing against. It is going to serve the writer well as a sample showcasing a talented and original voice, and it would not be a surprise to see it gain momentum in development."

After a two-week, sold-out run at the Toronto Fringe Festival in the summer of 2017, theatre company Subverting Something brings Veronika Gribanova’s play Lover Lover to the The Duplex in New York City’s iconic Greenwich Village. Lover Lover is a story about heartbreak, identity, sexuality, polyamory, and about the limitations and possibilities of love. It is the story of two lovers that have never met, and another one that’s oddly holding them together. BACKSTAGE Magazine interview July 7, 2017
#IGotCast With Backstage: Derek Nicoletto
New York actor Derek Nicoletto has some advice for his fellow urbanites: Leave. “Be open to traveling outside Manhattan or Brooklyn,” he says. “We’d all love to get great roles in the city, but it’s more important to be acting as much as possible than to be making the commute an easy one. Sometimes ‘pounding the pavement’ means a highway, not a sidewalk.”
Nicoletto’s creed is working for him. In the past year, he’s been cast in several projects through Backstage, including the leading role in the play “Soulmates or Nada,” as well as in “Reach Out” at the upcoming Open Hydrant Theater Company Urban Waves Festival.
Backstage has been instrumental in his success. “I created a role search specific to my type, location, and age range,” he says. “When a listing fits this description, a notice is sent out to me immediately, so I am able to respond as quickly as possible.”
Backstage was also pivotal in Nicoletto’s decision to transition from a more traditional job to acting full-time. “I was an attorney for 10 years before quitting completely to study at an NYC conservatory that advertised on Backstage,” he says. “I use Backstage daily now that I’m well-trained and ready for the world of auditioning.”
